THE "CATCH UP"

SERIES 3:

THE ADVENTURER!!!

Hello folks,

Happy Eid-el-Kabir to my Muslim audience, may the blessings of this season abide with you.

I caught up with Sam in my last post on The "Catch Up" series, where I get to share extracts from my conversations with folks in the design and build Industry. I guess you loved it

Today I'm calling on ROY, a dynamic personality who has always been a source of inspiration to me and many others. He represents a class of professionals groomed in Nigeria but whose works speak volumes globally.

And here is his Bio πŸ‘‡

ROY is a Nigerian architect acclaimed for his groundbreaking designs and global know-how. He studied Architecture, product design, UI/UX and most recently Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the digital built environment in the United Kingdom where he currently lives and practices architecture.

His professional portfolio cuts across Africa, Middle East and Europe; an exposure that has granted him access to cities known for progressive architecture and ambitious projects.

Roy's experience and opportunity have motivated him to develop an interest in building a self-sufficient modern city in the future (which he believes is a way to ignite the competitive best practices of Africans to global standards), hence spurring development and level up opportunities in our regions.

Roy currently lives and works in Manchester, United Kingdom where he continues adding value to the architectural scenery.

His works demonstrates his commitment to sustainability, innovation, and cultural sensitivity in creating built environments.

Footnote: I honestly struggled to summarize Roy's profile into a short write up the same way it was tough to streamline our 90+ minutes conversation highlighted as follows πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

#Q1:

I SUSPECT AS A KID YOU MUST HAVE BEEN TAGGED "WAYWARD" BECAUSE OF YOUR ADVENTUROUS PERSONALITY. CAN I HAVE AN IDEA OF WHAT GROWING UP WAS LIKE FOR YOU?

Well I wasn't a wayward kid growing up, records have it that I was a high performer in my academics, and I'm quite sure my parents, teachers and guardians would attest to the fact that I was easy going.

However I should say that I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A NON- CONFORMIST WHO EXPRESSES HIS IDEOLOGIES AND DIFFERENCES THROUGH CREATIVITY AND ADVENTURE.

So as a kid, I was timid with authority figures but wild with my friends, a disparity that helped and still helps me in many ways.

Follow up question:

Me: Now I get you. So if I'm correct, your submission to authority figures helped you excel in your academics, while your ability to explore with friends drove your adventurous capabilities.

Roy: Absolutely

#Q2:

FROM WORKING ACROSS DIFFERENT CONTINENTS, WHAT IS THE UNIFYING TRAIT YOU HAVE DISCOVERED ABOUT HUMANS?

There are so many, but permit me to summarize them as follows πŸ‘‡

- ALL HUMANS ARE EQUAL REGARDLESS OF THEIR COLORS

- THERE ARE NO PERFECT SYSTEMS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD

- COUNTRIES FAVORED BY NATURE TEND TO DISFAVOUR NATURE, WHILE THOSE DISFAVORED BY NATURE HAVE HAD TO EMBRACE DEVELOPMENT OUT OF THE NEED TO SURVIVE

- THRIVING SOCIETIES ARE COLLABORATIVE IN NATURE, WHILE INDIVIDUALISM HINDERS DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH

- THE RECIPE FOR DEVELOPMENT IS IN THE PERFECT BLEND OF REFINED TALENTS WITH EFFICIENT SYSTEMS

Just to mention a few

Follow up question:

Me: Well said Sir, and that makes me wonder, where is your favorite place in the world?

Roy: BOTSWANA πŸ‡§πŸ‡Ό

#Q3:

HOW DO YOU BLEND ARCHITECTURE WITH ADVENTURE?

Adventures come natural to me and that's regardless of the profession I practice, but in answering the question, I should emphasize the importance of keeping routines.

- I RUN 5KM EVERY WEEKEND

- I BIKE 12-15 MINS EVERYDAY

- I TAKE 12,000 STEPS DAILY

- I DON'T SIT TOO MUCH

- I AVOID EATING BETWEEN MEALS

And I can go on and on

Simply put, I keep routines, and by doing so I am building up for adventure. The same principle applies to everyone regardless of their profession.

Follow up question

Me: Cool... I remember your sea diving adventure in Iran. Have you had any major adventure since then?

Roy: Nothing major besides learning to read and write in Arabic and working towards building a city.

Although recently I was close to flying a motorized kite during a family vacation in Georgia but I had a nudge to decline upon sighting my 11 year old son πŸ˜‚

That's a good place to pause so you can have a good laugh while I work towards hooking you up with another interesting post in a week from now.

And just in a case you have a nudge to feature me on your next project or perhaps refer me on someone else', here is a good place to get started πŸ‘‡
