THE "GETTING TO A YES" SERIES 2: THE SPONSOR

THE

"GETTING

TO A YES

SERIES 2:

THE

SPONSOR!!

Happy Weekend Folks,

Trust you are doing great and making the best of the month of June.

From my end I took up a series titled "Getting To A Yes" where I share insights on how you can push to get the job done, working with different (but reasonable) people on your project.

I started out identifying the folks you would mostly need a yes from and the first on the list is The Sponsor (a.k.a The Boss). My choice of the word "Sponsor" (over Boss) is deliberate and that's because anyone can claim to be the boss yet have no capacity, while being a sponsor is capacity personified 😊

This statement hails from my past experiences mistaking appearance for capacity, especially working in a city with a "fake it, till you make it" culture (name of the city withheld) 😄

The question therefore is; how can one qualify The Sponsor?, and how do you get a yes from them? 👇

#1:

LISTEN

WHO THEY ARE

Again, I say listen, not watch!

Identifying who a real sponsor is requires paying attention to their goals, vision and aspirations, not their outfit.

A typical project sponsor always spells out why they want to embark on a project with so much precision you cannot miss if you listen.

Getting a hold of what they really want is all you need to gain full access to them.

Other common traits of a project sponsor include:

- They value your time as much as they value theirs,

- They don't use hastiness as a means to drive anxiety, so they can wait if you need some time.

- They most likely had multiple options but considered you going by their guts.

#2:

REPEAT

WHAT YES MEANS TO THEM

To repeat correctly is to fit the missing piece of the puzzle in the right place.

If you have listened well enough, chances are high you have gotten the brief with some level of accuracy.

Be sure to respond, repeating the crucial points made in the brief gotten from the project sponsor, as this communicates a sense of solidarity to the course they are charting.

Once this is established, you are seen to be a right fit for the task at hand.

#3:

DO IT

HOW TO GET A YES FROM THEM

Project sponsors are task oriented. The word they love to hear from you is "DONE".

It's therefore important to avoid over blotting your capacity to deliver, just to buy them over. You may have your way once but would end up losing more on the long run.

So in order to get a yes and keep the tempo, be sure to:

- be modest with your promises (under promise)

- exceed expectations (over deliver)

- get Consult Kenny on board for a seamless delivery whenever the need arises
