THE "LIFE OF A PROJECT MANAGER"

SERIES 3:

BE PROACTIVE!!!

Hi there,

Trust you are doing great this weekend.

It's been an interesting time reflecting on my experience as a project manager on a series titled The "Life Of A Project Manager", I guess it's been worth your attention.

In my last post I approached the series from the perspective of glitches emphasizing the importance of ensuring due diligence on a project.

Today I will be addressing the subject of CONSTRAINTS.

Often times once a project is embarked on, you literarily just signed up to potential constraints which could be in form of time, funds and several other unexpected challenges that poses restrictions on the project.

Allow me share some constraints that are likely to occur on your project with reference to my experience as a project manager. I hope you get some insights on ways to identify these constraints and be proactive in tackling or managing them.

Let's get it started πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

#1:

FUNDS AND BUDGET

Of all the factors responsible for delay and setback on projects, constraints related to funding and budgeting is top on the list.

Getting your cost right goes a long way in fostering the success of a project and from experience I can almost always tell where a project is headed upon sighting a B.O.Q or cost estimate.

One good way to avoid complications with funds and budget on your project is by engaging consultants who will work independently on creating bottom lines for contractors, vendors and other stakeholders across all phases of the project.

#2:

TIMELINE AND DEADLINE

Perhaps these are the terms I dread most on a project and that is simply because unlike cost, timelines are highly undermined by clients, sponsors and guess who?, project managers πŸ™„

By the ways, if anyone ask me "what's the quickest way to losing weight as a project manager?, my answer will be "getting to meet project deadlines". πŸ˜‚

Rising early, sleeping late, and skipping meals can be synonymous to meeting project deadlines.

And on the flip side, I have had folks who get to add weight while trying to meet deadlines, but guess what's responsible for that?. Junk food πŸ”πŸ₯πŸ˜‚πŸ€Έ

Guys you know yourselves πŸ˜‚

#3:

BREAK AND HALT

From the breakout of the COVID19 pandemic in 2020 to some other emergencies I have seen halt projects unexpectedly, I have come to realise that breaks are part of projects.

While some breaks are stipulated on project plans, others are totally unexpected, however one thing that both scenerios should share in common is preparation.

And I should say that beyond having technical plans in place for breaks on your project, it's equally important to be prepared mentally and emotionally

As a project manager what really amazes me about project breaks is the sharp contrast between the sense of importance you feel when you are active on a project, and the unbelievable feeling of neglect as soon as there is a recess.

So the lesson is, BEYOND PROJECTS, BE HUMAN

So on this very note I bring you to the 3rd perspective on this series, which is all about HUMANS, watch out!
