 SERIES 2:

PRONOUNCE

IT

RIGHT!!!

Hi folks,

Trust you are doing great and I guess September is coming on well.

It's back to school and I'm pleased to have my esteemed audience in class ☺️

I introduced a new series in my last post, highlighting a course outline that will help the Consult Kenny audience and subscribers brush up their interior design prowess.

G.I.R 101 was first in line and the objective of this course is to help you with the right pronunciation of interior design terms.

Just as it is with every other profession, there are terminologies peculiar to interior design. While you may be familiar with some, there are others you need guidance with, especially terms that originate from other languages like French, Chinese, Latin, Italian and others.

Here are a few examples of such terms, their pronunciation and meanings 👇

#1:

FRENCH

ÉTAGÈRE

🗣️/ etaʒɛr /

A freestanding or hanging set of open shelves, designed to display trinkets, ornaments or other decorative objects.

For the sake of my love for french, below are other interior design words with their root in french 👇

TROMPE L'OEIL

🗣️/ trȯmp-ˈlȯi /

a style of painting in which objects are depicted with photographically realistic detail

It also means "the use of similar technique in interior decorating"

FOYER

🗣️/foy·ay/

an entrance hall or other open area in a building used by the public, especially a hotel or theatre.

#2:

CHINESE

AND LATIN

FENG SHUI

🗣️ /fuhng shwey/

🗣️    /feng shwee/

A traditional method of Chinese design based around energy forces.

Feng shui is meant to bring the individual in harmony with their surroundings.

ARABESQUE

🗣️ /a·ruh·besk/

an ornament or style that employs flower, foliage, or fruit and sometimes animal and figural outlines to produce an intricate pattern of interlaced lines.

#3:

ITALIAN

TERRACOTTA

🗣️ /teh·ruh·ko·tuh/

baked' or 'cooked earth'. In other words, this word was borrowed from Italian vocabulary: terra (“earth”) + cotta (“baked”)

It appears I have succeeded in twisting your tongue a little bit this weekend 😄

Not to worry, Consult Kenny PRO has a line up of classes where you can learn the A-Z of interior design and become familiar with the terminologies without stress.
