THE "GETTING TO A YES" SERIES 3: THE INFLUENCER

THE

"GETTING

TO A YES

SERIES 3:

THE

INFLUENCER!!

Hi there,

Trust this post meets you well.

It's still the "Getting To A Yes" series, where I seek to help my audience know how best to work with people and get the job done. I'm here in furtherance of an insightful conversation on how to get to a yes with the parties that matter on your projects.

In my last post I started out with the project sponsors, the ones who champion the vision behind the project and have the capacity to make things happen.

And now to the INFLUENCER; the largely invisible yet one of the most important persons in the room.

If you have been following the ongoing FIFA world cup tournament, then you will understand my description of the influencer as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), but this time on the project. ⚽ 🤩

As it is with football, the VAR won't stop the players from doing whatever they want, yet it has the capacity to influence decisions both to their favor and disfavour.

Quite complicated you say, but I'm here to help you navigate smoothly, and here is how 👇

#1:

LISTEN

AND

WATCH

Remember in my last post I mentioned you should listen when you are with the project sponsor. When it comes to the Influencer, it's important to both listen and watch.

Your approach on this will vary depending on factors like the personality of the project sponsor (outspoken or reserved), the project type (highly structured or free-for-all), and so on.

Here are a few guidelines to help you identify an influencer 👇

- Be attentive enough to pick the names the project sponsor calls frequently.

- Look out for that person that the project sponsor usually gaze at when they make crucial points.

- Ask the project sponsor questions like "who is next in line, when I'm unable to reach you"

#2:

REACH

OUT

Once you have the feeler of a likely influencer, please do well to reach out to them. Acknowledge the importance of their role and seek to know their interests on the project.

Whereas there is a contract and some form of agreement (invoice, terms of engagement etc) you already have with the project sponsor, it's a bit dicey with the influencer as they usually are not held by the rules, yet play a significant role in how well you do on the project.

In other words, the influencer deserves your attention, while your loyalty should remain with the project sponsor.

A very difficult balance to achieve if you have a wrong influencer. In this case, I wish you good luck 🙏

#3:

KEEP

TABS

Congratulations if you crossed the hurdle in my last slide, and I say this because I know how much damage one wrong influencer can cause on a project.

Now that I assume you have identified and reached out to the right influencer, what's next?

Ensure you don't lose touch with them by doing the following:

- seek for the aspirations of the influencer and sync that with the vision of the project sponsor.

- keep the influencer in copy of the progress you make on the project from time to time.

- acknowledge their contributions and give them credits for every value they add to the project.

And while you are at it, don't forget the main characters in the scene; the project sponsor, and Team Consult Kenny.
