THE "AFTERTHOUGHT" SERIES 3: THE DESIRABLE

THE

"AFTER

THOUGHT"

SERIES 3:

THE

DESIRABLES!

Hello Folks,

Trust this post meets you well.

Thanks for paying attention to my line of thoughts on The "Afterthought" Series,

In my last post, I got on a real life case focusing on THE ESSENTIALS; as I talked about features that are fundamental to the functionality of a space, yet missed out.

This time around, let's have a look at a life case scenario classified as THE DESIRABLE; an afterthought that is NOT essential but highly desired by the occupier of a space.

I mean, I have had to deal with many afterthought scenarios as an interior designer and project manager, but the scenario I will be presenting today really got me on my toes.

Please follow through for the full gist 👇

#1:

WHAT

HAPPENED

I got engaged to supply furniture pieces for an office space, and everything was going on well until I accepted a supplementry order to fabricate and install a screen divider that partitions the reception from the work area.

The client's desire is to have a suspended divider that cuts through from floor-to-ceiling, even though there were no prior provision made for this in the space. A classical case of an afterthought.

I had presented a couple of designs that serves the same purpose but to no avail.

Here is a first-time client, referred by another highly esteemed client. Mehn!, it felt like being stuck between a 'shark and the deep blue sea' 😅

#2:

WHAT WE

DIDN'T DO

Really, I'm using the word "we" just because I'm a good team player 😀

Then also, in the course of my career I have realised afterthoughts are largely as a result of people's inability to capture the entire process required for the fulfilment of their desires.

Truth be told, nothing gets suspended without a hidden or concealed reinforcement either to the ceiling, floor, wall or even all of the above.

The principle for any concealed element is to factor the details required into the plan from the onset, a more cost effective and less demanding approach when compared to making a backward motion as mentioned in the life case scenario.

I hope you learn from this.

#3:

WHAT

YOU

SHOULD

DO

Just to strike a balance here.

As much as I'm glad I came through in this case, I should also mention that I don't jump on every "desirables" thrown at me, but I always identify with my client's needs and suggest the most meaningful approach.

And to be sincere, this sometimes require saying no or walking away just to save my reputation (and for my mental health too 😊).

So as I close this post, here are some guidelines on how to achieve the desirable with little or no stress 👇

✍️ be as detailed as possible when giving your brief

"I have personally found out that folks that almost wear me out with details of what they want, get to be more satisfied at the end compared to folks who leave details hanging".

👀read through the lines

"Do not neglect the annotatations on the designs, terms on the invoice or milestones on the progress reports. They are usually the best places to make changes early"

🤙 engage professionals like Team Consult Kenny
